At Hurst Green Church of England Primary School, we believe that an outstanding mathematics curriculum provides the foundation on which pupils can develop their critical understanding so that they can explore methodically, reason logically and make connections across all areas of the curriculum.
We apply a ‘Teaching for Mastery’ approach through the use of White Rose. This pedagogy supports pupils to develop an acquiring, deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of maths. Teaching for Mastery is a research and evidence-based approach that is recommended by the Department for Education (DfE) and the National College for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

Mathematics Long Term Overview – Our long term overview for EYFS is currently being rewritten, so please speak to our maths lead (Miss Turton) or EYFS lead (Mrs Barnes) if you would like to discuss it. At Hurst Green, Willow Class follow ‘Mastering Number’ as the main maths lesson for all number work. 1 day a week, Willow Class follow the White Rose ‘Shape, space and measure’ unit. EYFS ensure that children are offered opportunities within the wider provision to embed their learning, including by using ideas suggested in the materials.

Mastering Number at Reception and KS1
Supporting pupils to develop good number sense.
We use this programme to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children in Willow and Silver Birch. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed to support success in the future.

Key Instant Recall Facts
To help develop children’s fluency in mathematics, we ask them to learn Key Instant Recall Facts each half term. We expect children to practise their KIRFs at least 3 times a week.
We have created these lists of KIRFs to align with the National Curriculum. Learning KIRFs shouldn’t be time-consuming. In fact, KIRFs can be practised anywhere: in the car, walking to school, at the dinner table. The most important thing is facilitating regular practice. Little and often will support your child in retaining these facts for the long term!
