At Hurst Green, we take great pride in our Music learning and it is an integral part of the school. Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression, and it can play an important part in the personal development of children. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, therefore, Music teaching and learning at Hurst Green enables pupils to better understand the world they live in. Music also plays an important part in helping pupils feel part of a community. Besides being a creative and enjoyable subject, we believe that Music is also a highly academic and demanding subject.
We provide opportunities for all pupils to create, play, perform and enjoy music, develop the skills needed to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to make judgements about the quality of music.

Intent
At Hurst Green we use the Sing Up Music Curriculum. This curriculum clearly sets out the knowledge, skills and understanding to be gained by all children at each key stage. It covers a broad and diverse range of repertoire, approaches and musical traditions. It connects the interrelated strands of singing, playing, performing, composing, improvising, listening, and appraising. We want all children to develop the self-confidence, skills, knowledge and understanding to develop a lifelong love of music, whilst also providing a secure foundation that enable them to take music further should they wish to.
Implementation
Over the course of each phase, children will cover the appropriate musical learning, revision of concepts, repetition and the regular practising of skills that are essential for effective musical learning. All children participate in music lessons every week from Nursery to Year 6. Lesson include warn-ups, a main activity and a conclusion.
Impact
We hope that all children enjoy their music lessons and this supports them to make good progress over time. Children are assessed against the learning objectives that the learning they have covered.
